G1 & G2

The Western greenhouses are divided into an upper and lower portion. The upper portion is used mainly for mature plants. The lower portion is used for propagation and biology lab plants. I took pictures of all the upper greenhouses today and I'll introduce the first two below:

This greenhouse is called G1 and is a mash-up of many different plant species.

Some of the plants on the left include St. Augustine Grass, Flowering Maple, Polka-dot Plant, Hibiscus, and English Ivy.

On the right you can see a Boston Fern, Hydrangea, Oleander, Chives, and a Dwarf Banana in the lower left corner.

Now for the next greenhouse, G2.

This section consists primarily of succulents and cacti. At the far end their are some Dragon Fruit plants however they have yet to produce any fruit. The only thing really out of place is the young Japanese Maples.

On the other side of the greenhouse there is a large collection of herbs. Some of the plants in this area include Lemon Geranium, Basil, Parsley, Thyme, Pepper, Sweet Grass, and at least 7 varieties of Mint.

Here is a large toad I noticed while watering.

I'll update with the next three greenhouses over the weekend.

  2. You might be better off transferring the Japanese maples outside so that they can get a bit more sun and, depending on your winter temperatures, could overwinter them outside or in a cold frame. Where they are now is likely to be too stuffy and humid, particularly if the greenhouse are heated.

It's nice to see an interest in plants at a young age, when I was at college that was the last thing on my mind!

  3. Thanks for the information. They don't seem to be growing very well and that may be the reason.
