Although they grow slowly, I've really enjoyed watching my Lithops develop from seed. It's been about ten months since I sowed the seeds and the first little sprouts started to pop up. You can see just how tiny they were nine days after sowing here. Although there were a few set-back along the way I've manged to keep 15 happy and alive. They haven't gone through a dormancy cycle or flowered yet. They are however starting to differentiate into different colours.
Does anyone think these look too crowded? I was wondering if I should repot or or wait a bit longer. I was also wondering if these Anthurium seeds might be fertile. I've never had any develop this far before. I think my current fluorescent lights are a bit too heavy on the red spectrum because many of my plants have started to flower.
Fertile, yes, if they're developing, but don't do anything with them until they've been orange for a while and are beginning to shrivel a little. I don't know that you have to wait that long, but that's how long I waited with mine, and they all sprouted, so I know that that at least works.
ReplyDeleteI've had some lithops seeds for about 5 years that someone gave me. I've been meaning to sow them and see if they'd germinate. I'm pretty much in total agreement with Mr. S on how to treat them.
ReplyDelete@mr_subjunctive, I'll make sure to wait. Not sure if I'll try sprouting them. I really don't have the room but probably will anyways.
ReplyDelete@MRBROWNTHUMB, You should plant them! Slow but worth it. Still waiting for the first flower though.
They are so cute! Nice lime-y color too! Congrats. It seems too early to try and thin them out...I would wait a little longer (or never)....although at this rate...maybe a few more years! LOLOL. Just my opinion...
ReplyDeleteI live in fear of my Lithops. So touchy. But I've kept a bunch of them alive for about a year now which is more than I can say when I lived back east.
ReplyDeletethey look great! :) i think you can leave them in this pot for now and transplant them when they get their next leaves/in the spring, maybe?
ReplyDeletethanks for the pic~
@Julie, I'm up for waiting. Haven't found the perfects pots yet anyways!
ReplyDelete@Kaveh, I've never had too much trouble. They just seem to stop growing every few months.
@Rika, Spring sounds good. I hope I get some flowers next year...
They have come along nicely! I bet you are glade you are not in London this winter :-)
ReplyDelete@Dan, That's for sure! The winter in south-western Ontario is brutal this year.
ReplyDeletedid your conophytums not make it? I recently sowed a bunch of lithops and conophytums - they are a real test of patience aren't they?
ReplyDeletewould love an update on them soon!
Unfortunately I had far less Conophytum sprout to begin with and for some reason I ended up loosing the few that did. :( The Lithops were a little battered in my recent move but they all seem to have survived. I'll be sure to update soon!
