Conophytum & Lithops Update III (16 Days)

The Lithops seedlings have been growing very well.  I think germination has just about finished and there are a minimum of 47 sprouts!  Not bad considering I ordered 50 seeds.  There must have been a few extra.  You can see below that Larry is by far the largest of the Lithops.  The seeds I purchased are of mixed variety so I'm thinking Larry is just different from the rest of his kind.  On I side note I'm going to start putting the time since sowing in the updates.  If it doesn't match up with the dates that's because it's from when the photos are taken.

The Conophytum on the other hand are doing resoundingly meh :(.  They're just kind of sitting there.  I think I may have actually lost a seedling because I can only count seven.  Any thoughts?  That's not too bad if they all survive but I would like to have some extra just in case.  I'm still misting every morning and evening as well as placing a plastic bag over the top of their pots so they don't dry out.

  1. Funny. We name everything. But I never thought of naming a plant. Cool. Good luck Larry! Grow, baby, grow!

  2. You've never named a plant? What kind of crazy person are you? :)

I only name them when it's warranted and I need some way of identifying it separately (usually). Referring to it as the biggest one simply won't do and I'll definitely be refering to it individually because of it's size.

  4. Hi Rika and welcome! I love all the pictures on your blog. Lithops are a very interesting plant. I accidentally jetted one of the seedlings over this morning with a mister. It was on the right setting but getting low on water... I tried setting it up and pushing it back in the soil. I hope it's alright.

  5. That's the worst. For whatever reason I couldn't get any eggplants to grow last year. I plant some seeds in the garden and none came up. So I germinated seeds in cups and transferred the seedlings to the garden....they died. Everything else did okay. Guess they just didn't like my dirt! Not sure if I'll try again this year. Prolly won't name 'em though.

don't know if it's true but i read that young lithops are more forgiving than grown-ups - i'm sure the little guy will be just fine :) keep us updated!

  7. I wouldn't be surprised if this was true. They resemble little cones now so I don't think the roots were damaged when I pushed it back in. I'll just have to wait and see. Most of the pictures are from the UWO greenhouse plants but thanks!
