Cymbidium hybrid (Orchid)

The buds will be entirely open in a few more days!

  1. Gorgeous. A few years ago I was asked to write an a review article for Library Journal about orchid books. They sent me tons of them and knowing little about actually growing them, I was smitten with cymbidiums. I searched everywhere for one and apparently they are not readily available for purchase in my neck of the woods. I did eventually buy a puny little one on E-bay but it never bloomed and died of course. I have had better luck with the more common variety (phaleonopsis??) but my drafty house is not inviting for orchids and three years is the longest I've kept one alive. I need a greenhouse.

  2. I've never been able to grow them in the home either. I think Cymbidiums are more difficult. They also take a really long time to form buds and do so less often than other varieties. I'm not sure if it's just the varieties in the greenhouse, but they also seem to be relatively large. These reasons may be why you don't see them for sale very often. I think a greenhouse is definitely the way to go (given appropriate funds of course).
