My Lil' Lithops

For a true test of patience, something everyone should try is growing Lithops from seed.  It's quite the process.  These seedlings are now two years old and it's hard to believe that used to be nothing but tiny green dots.  They've survived two moves across the country.  I'm really hoping they'll flower this year.  They've had less than ideal conditions so they're small for their age, but nothing would delight me more than to see some blooms.

Some of the plants are in the process of splitting, revealing much more vibrant colouration.  It will be interesting to see how they continue to change with time.  Does anyone have recommendations for watering/fertilizing Lithops?  I've found it hard to get the levels quite right.

  1. I'm clueless when it comes to Lithops. I always kill the adult plants I buy. My seedlings are less successful than my other mesembs. I have 3 from a batch of mixed Lithops species seeds that are over a year old and 3 Lithops optica rubra that are about 8 month old. I'm pretty sure my biggest crime is that I over indulge them. Too much water, not enough light and probably too much fertilizer though I really don't fertilize often. They are all so tiny but most of them have had their true leaves for quite some time. The fact that yours seem to still not shed their initial leaves tells me you are probably on the right track.

  2. They have actually already gone through one 'renewal' but only two seem to be entering that phase this year. I tend to just spray them with water ever two days or so in the evening. It's like the fog they'd get during nights in their natural habitat. Then just mix a low concentration of fertilizer into the spray every once in a while.
